Western Maine Homeless Outreach is a short term rapid-rehousing shelter. As such, shelter hours of operation are 4:00PM – 8:00AM. Guests are expected to check in for the evening and exit the facility in the morning.
With the assistance from special grants, WMHO has also had the opportunity to offer cooperative day programming options during the winter to help accommodate guests and to provide additional tools to assist with rehousing. Some of those past day programing options have included the following:
Healthy Food Coalition: Cooking class
Resume writing class
TD Bank: Financial preparedness – First Time Home Buyer
WMCA: Saving Money
Rent Smart: Maine State Housing program geared toward how to be a good tenant, budgeting, financial planning, filling out rental applications, maintenance & repairs, communication, rental laws and agreements.
WMHO has also established a partnership with Maine State Housing Authority to assist us in meeting our goals. December 2016 marked the first anniversary of the partnership between Maine State Housing Authority and Western Maine Homeless Outreach. With this partnership came the adoption of the Rapid Re-housing model. Since adopting this new model WMHO has provided navigation and case management services to 77 homeless individuals. We are pleased to share the following 2016 achievements:
Each guest/family is assigned a case manager/navigator to assist them with rehousing. After appropriate and suitable housing has been identified we will continue to meet them in their homes for a year after they have been rehoused. We provide ongoing financial and food assistance to former guests during that transitional period.
We also use a tracking tool called The Maine Homeless Management Information or "HMIS". Please click the link for more information. https://mainehmis.org/documents
